Happenings in Huguenot Trail's Vocational area...

Literacy:  This year, one of the main focuses of Rotary International was literacy.  Our current  President-Elect, Beth Llewellyn had a dream -- she wanted to team up with the organization called the Dictionary Project to give a dictionary to each 3rd grade student in Powhatan.  Our club applied for a District Simplified Grant to help with the cost.  Our application was accepted and we supplied dictionaries to all the 3rd graders in 5 elementary schools!  What joy to have different teams of Rotarians to label the books and then go to each 3rd grade classroom in each of the 5 schools to present each child with his/her own dictionary!  To some of these children, it was like Christmas morning to receive their very own book. We also provided a Thesaurus, Atlas and English/Spanish Dictionary to each teacher to use in the classroom. Thanks to Beth for pursuing a dream that we could help fulfill!  We hope we can make this a yearly event!

Interact:  Our Interact Club at Powhatan High School grew from 25 students last spring to over 120 young people!  Thanks to their President, Melissa Messler and our Vocational Service Chair, Randy Hall, the club is doing great things in the Powhatan Community.  Their agenda includes over 20 projects!  Some of them are:  reading to elementary school students, cleaning houses, trash clean-up, baby sitting, shopping for Bright Beginnings, cleaning for Habitat for Humanity and planning for and purchasing appliances for a Habitat home.  "Remarkably", says President Mel, "we have never turned anyone down!"  Many of their projects are those random acts of kindness--no one ever knows who provided the good deed!  This special group of young people is to be applauded! Please check out some pictures from their fund-raisers in our photo album section. As we all know, children are our future!  We hope that these Interactors will go on to be great Rotarians in the years ahead.
